Journalists need an excellent knowledge of law and ethics to operate effectively in an increasingly complicated environment. Participants can have the course assessed. The legal subjects to be covered will include:
• Freedom of expression and of the media
• Defamation
• Privacy
• Contempt and other court reporting issues
• Access to information legislation
• Hate speech
The ethical issues to be covered will include:
• Accuracy
• Fairness
• Independence
• Minimising harm
• Accountability
• Relations with sources
• Recent ethical debates and controversies
• Practical decision-making
The course will be intensely practical in approach, with a sharp eye on ensuring its practical applicability to real newsroom situations. A comprehensive set of handouts is included.
